Little
known and hardly explored by outsiders, Basilicata
is untouched and unspoiled. In fact people probably
recognize it more by being the arch at the bottom
of the boot, between Calabria and Puglia. Remote and
scarcely populated there was a time when this land
was full of life. Originally inhabited by the ancient
Greeks and Byzantines many of their remains have recently
been uncovered. Later the Basilian order of Monks
migrated into the area and established the hearts
of many of the communities still found today. It was
from their influence that the region came to be called
"Basilcata".
The
harsh mountainous region gives way to beautiful sandy
beaches that lack nothing in natural beauty. Along
the Mare Ionio, named after the Greek heritage, the
water is a beautiful blue and just waiting to be explored
by outsiders.
