If you were
to throw darts at a map of Italy Umbria would be the
bulls-eye. Located in the center of Italy Umbria is
the only region that doesn’t have a shoreline nor
border another country. The regions of Toscana, Le
Marche, and Lazio engulf the region.
|
Often referred to as Toscana’s sister
region, or even more so as "The Green Heart of
Italy", Umbria is filled with pastoral countrysides
and lush mountain wilderness. It is filled to the
brim with medieval culture and spirituality. It is
very hard not to feel totally at peace amid the fertile
blue-green hills of Umbria. It makes a perfect place
for a type of spiritual retreat. Perhaps this is the
reason why Umbria has produced an abundant share of
saints. St. Francis, St. Clare, St. Benedict, St.
Rita and St. Valentine.

Umbria is not just for saints, however;
it does have its fair share of beauty for the average
traveler. The medieval/renaissance cities like Perugia,
Assisi, Gubbio and Orvieto provide this region with
its fair share of artwork that helps it step out of
the shadows of Toscana.
